Pearl was released earlier last month as a prequel to X, both directed by Ti West and starring Mia Goth. The movie takes place in Texas, 1918, and follows a young girl named Pearl who is living on a farm with her Mother and paralyzed father whom she must take care of. Pearl dislikes her farm life and wants to move away to become a dancer, much to her Mother’s dismay. Pearl’s husband, Howard, has left for war and she greatly resents him for leaving her on the farm. But, when Pearl finds out that her local church is hosting dance auditions, she is determined to go. And she won’t let anything or anyone get in her way.

This is not only a great Horror movie to watch with friends, but it is also a very aesthetically pleasing film to look at. Pearl gives a Wizard of Oz type of vibe with its many bright colors and fantasy-like visuals. At the same time, the movie’s themes are in stark contrast to its beautiful scenery. Pearl herself also acts as an anti-princess. Princesses are kind and pleasant to be around, while Pearl is violent and struggles with her anger issues.

So, if you are looking for a good movie to watch for Halloween, Pearl should definitely be on your list.
