The Super Blue Moon

The Super Blue Moon

Ever heard the saying “Once in a blue moon”? This means to do something very rarely. On  August 30/31 2023 at 7:45 pm, all around California night sky was the first Blue Moon in 5 years. Did you see the light shining through your windows at night?

The super blue moon occurred on August 30th.  Although the moon is called “The blue moon” It is not actually blue, It is very white and radiant in the night sky instead.

So what exactly is the blue moon if it’s not blue? According to NASA “the blue moon is the term for when we see the full moon twice in a single month” So it’s simply just the 2nd full moon in the same month. The term ‘’Blue Moon’’ is believed to have originated in 1883 after the eruption of Krakatoa. The volcano put so much dust in the atmosphere that the moon actually looked Blue in color so that’s when the phrase ‘’Once in a Blue Moon’’ was created.

Space.com says “When the Moon is at the closest point to Earth at the same time that it is full, a supermoon is occurring, where it appears closer, larger and brighter in the sky. In 2023, four out of the 13 full moons are supermoons.”

When will we get another one? NASA says “The time between super blue moons is quite irregular ― it can be as much as 20 years ― but in general, 10 years is the average. The next super blue moons will occur in a pair, in January and March 2037.” So it seems like a little while til we get lucky with another one.

Is the Blue Moon one of the rarest Moons? Yes! According to NASA a Blue Moon is when there is more than one full moon in a month or more than 3 full moons in a month or more than 3 full moons in a season.

If you’re into spiritual things, the blue moon is considered a great time to manifest, release negative energy, and a good time to complete goals. Some even regard it as being lucky.  People believe that since Blue Moons are rare that it symbolizes a rare opportunity that is about to find you!

The blue moon had a rare appearance and it was beautiful in the night sky. If you didn’t get to see this one, be sure not to miss the next one in 14 years.
