Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a month honoring Hispanics all around the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and ends on October 15th. It first started in 1968. Originally it wasn’t a month long, it actually lasted just a week, it later got changed to last a full month in 1988. During Hispanic Heritage Month, many Latin countries celebrate their independence. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the history and culture of Hispanics.

I asked students how they felt being Hispanic during Hispanic Heritage Month and many said “They feel proud and happy that they get recognition.” Many also said they “feel seen and appreciated.”  I asked a  student why it’s special to them and they said, “he’s happy that his culture got recognized for a whole month.”

Many Hispanic students are Chicanos/Chicanas meaning that they are born in the United States but have Mexican descent. The Chicano walkout happened in 1968 but was important to Chicanos. It was important because most of the Chicanos in L.A schools walked out of class to protest for better education. This event helped the future generations because Hispanics now have a better education than what it was 55 years ago.
